John Slivon

Candidate for Co-op Board of Directors

Why would you like to serve as a member of the Co-op’s Board of Directors?

My reason for wanting to serve on the Board of Directors of the Keweenaw Co-op fall into two areas: my personal desire to be able to buy the foods and related goods I want and am unable to by elsewhere except online; at least as important to me is that as a Co-op, the board of directors has not done a good enough job of communicating with the members/owners. The Board of Directors must represent the interests and priorities of its members/owners, first and foremost! It cannot do that without sufficient dialogue. Two areas of governance involved here are: "The Ends” (what should our goal be?), and "Executive Limitations” (what standard of ethics and prudence will we set for ourselves?) The Board of Directors has attempted to define the "Ends” but, in my opinion, has neglected the ethics in the "Executive Limitations.”

Do you have particular skills you would like to explore and share in your service on the Board of Directors?

Knowledge of Policy Governance. I am also well read in the areas of GMO’s and worldwide agricultural practices. I am a creative thinker who can solve problems.

Do you have any questions about serving as a Board member?

No.
